Russell Hokes's job as a painter of interstate road lines isn't working out, so he decides to become an author. He secures a generous advance from a publisher expecting 50,000 words on vanishing small-town America.
The would-be writer blows through his cash and doesn't have a page to show for it until his car breaks down outside of Wigfield. The town is slated to be underwater when the government opens the dam. Wigfield's misfit residents, with their pick-a-part junk yards and strip clubs don't fit in the picture of Americana, but they will have to do.
Amy Sedaris, Paul Dinello, and Stephen Colbert are Second City alums and co-authors of Wigfield. They pool their talents to collaborate on this funny tale of the "Can Do Town That Just May Not." Russell Hokes meets a cast of bizarre townsfolk as the authors spoof small-town life, big-government influence and political corruption.
Readers familiar with the Sedaris name, the Daily Show, or The Second City will be on the same wavelength as Wigfield. Nearly every line of the book is funny for those who can identify and appreciate edgy humor. You'll find that there is a little bit of Wigfield in every town.
Sedaris, Dinello and Colbert successfully deliver silly, pure satire as expected. Photos of the authors posing as residents will burn an image of the town on your brain and make Wigfield a memorable read.
