Tears of the Giraffe
by Alexander McCall Smith
Book Review by Amy Coffin
When we last left Precious Ramotswe, she was busy establishing the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency—the only such female-owned agency in all of Botswana and the title of the series debut. Mma Ramotswe settled several discreet inquiries for her clients and even accepted a marriage proposal from Mr. J.L.B Matekoni.

Tears of the Giraffe, the second novel in the set opens immediately after the acceptance of engagement. The couple contemplates living arrangements for marriage and continues to run their respective businesses.

Investigations don’t come into full swing until the second half of Tears of the Giraffe. There are some surprising developments that affect the lives of Mma Ramotswe, Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni, and others.

As with the previous installment, author Alexander McCall Smith leads his heroine across the desolate and beautiful countryside. The African landscape comes alive under the author’s pen. The wondrous setting, magical characters and fascinating culture of Botswana make Tears of the Giraffe an excellent sequel to its extremely successful predecessor. This series shouldn’t be missed.
