Morality for
Beautiful Girls
by Alexander McCall Smith
Book Review by Amy Coffin
Tears of the Giraffe found Precious Ramotswe, founder of the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency in Botswana, suddenly a mother with 2 adopted children and a fiancé named Mr. J.L.B. Maketoni.

The third installment in this extremely popular series begins with all the characters making adjustments. Mr. J.L.B. Maketoni is depressed and unable to manage his automotive repair business. While he’s being treated, Mma. Ramotswe and her assistant move into the mechanic’s shop in order to run both businesses.
The investigative cases continue to arrive. The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency is hired to identify a poisoner among the family of a high government official, and assist in background checks for a beauty pageant. The second task lends its purpose as the book’s title.

Morality for Beautiful Girls is just as fresh and delightful as the series debut. Readers first met Precious Ramotswe as she established The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency in her native Botswana. Author Alexander McCall Smith rewards readers with colorful characters and dazzling descriptions of the African landscape.

Mma. Ramotswe’s assignments are usually simple, involving a sharp mind and clever strategy. The series works because of its originality and the author’s exceptional writing talent. Morality for Beautiful Girls is a fantastic read. To fully appreciate the adventures of Mma. Ramotswe and others, begin with The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency and savor each novel in order.
