Miriam the Medium
by Rochelle Shapiro
Book Review by Amy Coffin
Miriam is just trying to be a good Long Island wife and mother, but life keeps getting in the way. Her husband Rory’s business is failing and her teenage daughter Cara is becoming more distant. The family is dependent on the money Miriam earns as a phone psychic, but they’re not entirely supportive of her profession.

Spirits of dead relatives including a Russian grandmother guide Miriam in her readings. This “gift” is both a blessing and a curse. Miriam spends so much time looking into the lives of others that she’s missing the warning signs in her own family. A series of troubling events test the instincts of the phone psychic in Miriam the Medium.

Author Rochelle Shapiro has written a charming little tale of faith, love and trust. Miriam’s abilities are portrayed as both helpful and hindering. Friends and neighbors react negatively to her powers, so Miriam must decide when to caution others of impending trouble and when to keep her lips zipped and let the chips fall as they may.

Miriam the Medium is an entertaining story. Shapiro includes as cast of colorful characters. The plot wanders a bit in the middle, but everything comes together again in the end. The author is a psychic herself, which is why she’s able to blend the trade accurately and smoothly into Miriam’s suburban life. It doesn’t take a psychic to foresee a delightful reading experience for those who spend some time with Miriam the Medium.
