Kind of Heart is a collection of essays that celebrate good values and the joy of life. The anecdotes are short and sweet, with a format similar to the popular "Chicken Soup" books with a Christian slant. Each note ends with a "Magnet Message" and a corresponding bible verse. The Magnet Messages are small prayers or thoughts for reflection.
Author Molly Lemmons originally wrote for the Mustang News and Christian Journal. Kind of Heart is a compilation of her work for these publications. The essays are divided into twelve chapters that discuss the author's family, love and life in general through the eyes of a small-town girl.
This book sometimes reads like an autobiography. Lemmons reflects on her childhood in Texas and Oklahoma. Her stories focus on her family, church and life in a midwestern town. Some entries are funny, some are sad, but they all allow readers a glimpse of the good old days. Even younger folks can enjoy Lemmons memories. I found the stories quite similar to those my grandmother tells about her life.
Kind of Heart is best read in small doses. A couple essays each day will cheer you up and bring back fond memories. The author details the extent to which she went to be a part of 1950's fashion. Big skirts, sugar water and juice-can curlers were of the norm. Lemmons also remembers a time when people checked to make sure their doors were UNlocked in case a neighbor needed to borrow something while the family was at church.
It's quite clear the residents of Oklahoma are proud of Molly Lemmons. Governor Frank Keating and First Lady Cathy Keating wrote a gracious compliment on the back of the book jacket. It seems all that read this book are appreciative of Ms. Lemmons for bringing back those kinder, gentler days.
Though it may appear Kind of Heart is limited to local Oklahoma interest, it really does have national appeal. The small town flavor Lemmons describes once existed in my state, too. Through her words I was able to reflect on California's past as well.
I recommend this book to just about every type of reader. Women will enjoy Lemmon's efforts more than men will, simply because they can relate to her experiences. I don't see teen-agers taking a liking to this book because it's their job to act disinterested. Let them read it when they are older and can appreciate the past.
Being a member of Generation X, I wasn't sure I would enjoy Kind of Heart. However, Molly Lemmons has a gift in her love of life. She is kind enough to share that gift with others and was able to win me over. I bet she could so the same with you. Enjoy!
