Home from the
Vinyl Cafe
by Stuart McLean
Book Review by Amy Coffin
Home from the Vinyl Café chronicles a year in the life of Dave, Morley, their daughter and son. Adventures, mishaps and daily minutiae are presented in a set of related short stories arranged by seasons.

Author Stuart McLean is a renowned radio personality and best-selling author in his native Canada. Even if you don’t recognize the name, you’ll sense a comforting familiarity with his work. The titles of his stories highlight the events we’ve all endured: Dave Cooks the Turkey, The Birthday Party, Summer Camp, Road Trip, School Days, and The Jockstrap.

Dave and family are endearing characters to which readers can relate. McLean is compared heavily to Garrison Keillor and his writing style reflects that association. The stories in Home from the Vinyl Café were originally written for McLean’s radio show. The pieces flow well in book form and their folksy feeling is retained. The result is a thoroughly enjoyable, humorous slice of suburban life.
