Jersey bounty hunter Stephanie Plum attracts trouble like others catch a cold. Cases are in low supply at the office, so when her uncle goes missing, Stephanie begrudgingly initiates an investigation into his whereabouts. He was in a dispute with his trash collector but never showed up at the office. The incident becomes more suspicious when photos of body parts in garbage bags are found in the uncle’s desk.
Stephanie is low on cash and needs to get some extra work on the side. Mysterious co-worker Ranger hires her for some borderline legal security work. It’s not long before the bullets fly. The new job, the bounty hunting and searching for her uncle keep Stephanie busy. There are many brushes with danger, but it’s just business as usual in this fifth installment of Janet Evanovich’s popular series.
High Five picks up where Four to Score left off. The regular cast is present, including Lulu, Grandma Mazur and Jimmy Morelli as the on-again/off-again love interest.
Evanovich adds a new wrinkle by giving Ranger a bigger part in the story. He becomes Stephanie’s employer during the night hours. The sexual tension between the two increases with every task. Add Plum’s feelings for Morelli and you have a very interesting love triangle.
Stephanie never learns from past mistakes on the job. She makes even more errors in High Five. Evanovich relies on this tendency to drum up action in the novel. Hopefully new and inventive ways of getting into trouble will be unveiled for future installments. It would be a shame to see Stephanie get in a rut.
