Good Grief
by Lolly Winston
Book Review by Amy Coffin
“How can I be a widow? I’m only thirty-six. I just got used to the idea of being married, only test drove the words ‘my husband’ for three years: ‘My husband and I, my husband and I…’ after all that time being single!”

Sophie Stanton’s husband passed away three months ago and she’s trying to come to grips with the fact. Since Ethan died of cancer, Sophie’s had trouble finding interest in day-to-day life. Her job as a P.R. manager is in jeopardy because she isn’t enthusiastic about promoting a scrotal patch to media outlets.

Good Grief chronicles Sophie’s various experiences as a first-year widow. The book is divided into chapters named after stages of loss (denial, anger, depression) and some less traditional stages (Oreos, lust).

Lolly Winston’s debut novel is beyond impressive. She examines all aspects of grief in a tender, often amusing manner. Sophie is entirely likable and readers will enjoy watching her navigate her widowed world.

Good Grief is good medicine for the reading blahs brought on by the recent increase of homogenous chick lit. Winston’s fresh voice has produced a wonderful, heartfelt novel that is a pleasure to read.
