New Year’s Even has come and gone, but Anna can’t forget the events of that evening. She fell hard for Ben in the days leading up to the big party. When Ben stood Anna up without explanation, she decided to drop him and focus on adjusting to her new school: Beverly Hills High.
Girls on Film begins where The A-List left off. Everyone is back from winter break. Both Cammie and Dee want Ben for themselves, so they add annoyance to Anna’s already hectic life.
Author Zoey Dean introduces a new character in this second installment of the series. Anna’s older sister Susan comes to Beverly Hills when she gets kicked out of rehab. To Anna’s chagrin, Susan and Cammie become fast friends.
The novel moves between the conflict involving Anna and Ben, a film project for school, and catfights between all the players. Susan has a rather flat introduction, but she gets some good scenes at the novel’s open ending.
Like its predecessor, Girls on Film has brief scenes of drugs, alcohol and implied sex, which are actually tamer than similar stories. The novel is aimed at older adolescents. More “mature,” wiser readers will recognize this tale as 90210 on paper, except the characters are meaner and Tori Spelling is nowhere in sight.
