3rd Degree
by James Patterson
Book Review by Amy Coffin
Since its introduction in 1st to Die, the Women’s Murder Club has helped solve some of the Bay Area’s most gruesome crimes. Lindsay (the cop), Claire (the medical examiner), Jill (the assistant D.A.), and Cindy (the reporter) regularly meet to pool their resources over margaritas. The club has been a good support system in the past. However, the events in 3rd Degree will shock to close-knit group to its core.

While jogging with her dog, Lindsay witnesses a bomb explosion that levels a house and kills several people inside. A group calling itself “August Spies” takes credit for the blast.

Lindsay learns the August Spies have a horrifying agenda, using gruesome homicidal acts to target corporate greed. They must be stopped before the world’s high-profile economic leaders meet in San Francisco for the G-8 conference.

Patterson pulls out all the stops for his third installment of this popular series. He and collaborator Andrew Gross (The Jester) serve a slew of curveballs and shocking developments. On top of the August Spies investigations, the members of the Women’s Murder Club must accept that one of its own is in trouble. Lindsay also gets a love interest in Joe Molinari, Deputy Director of the Office of Homeland Security. Romance may not bloom if work gets in the way.

3rd Degree is as much a page-turner as its predecessors. Portions of the story seem a little too ambitious, but Patterson doesn’t disappoint his audience. The shocking events of this tale set the stage for future novels and have readers anxiously awaiting the fate of the Women’s Murder Club.
